Fan talk- tracking down a Cat 660

You may have read in Richard Campbell’s recent Classic Machines column about the massive Cat 660 scraper, the largest of the Cat scrapers.

Despite its age and pedigree this machine has never been imported into New Zealand. Low & behold in August three machines were landed, one for Vic Draper and two for Paul Clarke’s equipment business.

We had a lively email exchange this week with an Aussie tourist and miniature model collector who spied one of these machines(8km from Christchurch-his words) en route from Kaikoura to Christchurch. Our Aussie friend was flying out the next day but wanted to know whose machine it was and could he pay a visit to the site. Maps were studied.,calls were made and numbers were exchanged. Our friend managed to squeeze in a visit before departure, gratified by Richard’s knowledge and our ability to connect the dots!
