#BuildAKL competition winners

We haven’t blogged about #BuildAKL till now. #BuildAKL is an initiative designed by leading Auckland employers and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED). Auckland is in the middle of a construction and infrastructure boom, and there is a manpower shortage.

Despite this shortage there are parts of Auckland with high unemployment levels, particularly among the youth demographic. ATEED devised a scheme that uses social media channels(hence the hashtag) to gain traction. It’s certainly been a success – The #BuildAKL paid work experience competition has attracted 600 competition entries since its launch in September.

From these entries  Ten winners, aged between 16 and 23 years, have been identified and will start their rotational job placements in mid-January next year.

The winners have received a free training package from AWF and the Solomon Group which included the Site Safe passport, traffic control training and training on resilience in the workplace.

We look to hearing how these winners get on. This is a savvy and cost-effective approach to addressing Auckland’s growth constraints.
